(KPLU) - Kenmore's Bastyr University has promoted a long-time professor and researcher to lead its naturopathic medical school.

Dr. Jane Guiltinan is well known at Bastyr, where she spent a dozen years leading the university's medical teaching clinic. Guiltinan last year won the school's Founder's Award, the highest honor it bestows.

A Bastyr graduate, she's been instrumental in forging important ties and research collaborations with the wider regional medical community, including the University of Washington and Group Health's Center for Health Studies. A specialist in women's health issues, she's presented her work to a committee of the British Parliament.

Guiltinan was the first naturopathic doctor appointed to the board of a public health hospital. She's serving her third term with Harborview Medical Center.

She'll now lead Bastyr's largest degree program, with an enrollment of 450 students, replacing Dr. Gannady Raskin, who stepped down after 5 years. Guiltinan's appointment becomes effective at the end of the month. Gary Davis, KPLU News, Seattle.
