King County Executive Plans to Streamline Government
In his first 100 days in office, Dow Constantine says he's done a lot of listening--to small town mayors, rural community councils and just people on the street.
He's also been getting suggestions from county employees on how to generate more revenue. In a speech to the County Council, he shared one he received from a Metro worker.
The employee recommended the county "invite companies to install solar panels over our big bus bases and share some of the electricity they generate."
Presenting what he called his blueprint for change, Constantine said he'll sign a series of executive orders aimed at streamlining county government.
One would cut down on the paperwork small businesses have to fill out in order to do work for the county. Another would shorten the amount of time it takes to do inquests into police shootings.
In light of the county's budget crisis, some have suggested that county union contracts are too generous. Constantine pledged to negotiate labor contracts that are fair to taxpayers, but promised employees he would not be negotiating in public.
