Fire at Whatcom Middle School in Bellingham
(2009-11-05)
SEATTLE, WA
(KPLU) -
A fire that broke out about 1 a.m. Thursday at Whatcom Middle School in Bellingham burned until dawn, causing the roof and parts of the 106-year-old building to collapse. A strong wind fanned the flames. Bellingham fire officials say the school was undergoing a remodel and earthquake retrofit and work crews were seen welding on the building's roof Wednesday night. There are no reports of injuries. Classes have been canceled at Whatcom Middle School, as the district finds other space for the 580 students.
