Doctor Susan Hockfield will be inaugurated as the 16th president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology later today. Hockfield has a PhD in anatomy and neuroscience from Georgetown University. She comes to Cambridge from Yale, where she was provost.
She ascends to the president's office at an auspicious time for MIT. In recent years, the school has transformed its focus from defense-related projects to life sciences and biotechnology.
Though she officially takes the helm this afternoon, Doctor Hockfield has been in the top office since December.
