Cash for Clunker Appliances
The federal government has given Washington more than $5.6 million dollars in economic stimulus money to pass out to consumers who replace old appliances. Chuck Hunter -- with the state Department of Commerce - says its part of an effort to remove energy-hog appliances from the grid.
"We're expecting to give out about 45,000 clothes washer rebates and 15,000 refrigerator rebates," he says. "Which will save about a million dollars in energy costs and reducing water use by 355 million gallons."
Hunter says refrigerators and clothes washers were chosen because they're the ones likely to result in the greatest energy and water savings.
To get the rebate - $100 washers and $75 for fridges - you need to buy a new Energy Star-certified appliance to replace an old one. Then you download an online application at www.cashforappliancesWA.com and send it to Olympia for reimbursement.
The replacement has to have been bought after March 15th. Only residential consumers are eligible; no businesses or landlords. And the rebates are first-come, first-served. They'll be given out until the end of 2011 or until the money runs out.
