WSU Students Concerned About Budget Cuts
Full story
Sam Shaddox is a student at Washington State University in Pullman, but these days he's mostly full- time in Olympia, working as a student lobbyist on behalf of students at WSU. On Wednesday, though, he was back in Pullman, expressing concerns about proposed cuts in student financial aid:
Shaddox: "Currently, programs including the work study and the state need grant have either been slated for entire suspension or severe reduction of funding."
Shaddox spoke at a public forum hosted by university President Elson Floyd to talk about the state budget and its possible impacts on the university. Floyd said the university will work hard to preserve the State Need Grant program.
Floyd also said there was no way the university would balance its budget on their backs. He said the students don't have the financial means to pay it, and that even if they did, the state has an obligation to make sure it provides its fair share of the costs of an education.
