(KPLU) - Pete Carroll was introduced as the team's new coach Tuesday. Carroll's trademark energy and enthusiasm were palpable in his Seattle media debut. Speaking rapidly and passionately about his new job, Carroll says he's ready to take on what he calls an extraordinary' challenge.

"I know that the vision for the program starts at the top. I know that Paul Allen wants to win and he doesn't want to just win once in a while, he wants to win from now on. To me that fits exactly with the way I think."

What also apparently fit was the salary. Seahawks owner Allen will pay Carroll more than $30 million dollars over five years to do the job. It includes duties as executive vice president. What that means is power, and big influence over team operations. The Seahawks offered Carroll a sweet carrot tasty enough to leave Los Angeles and the USC Trojans behind. It was an offer to turn pro, the kind he's declined in the past.

"But always I had a thought that maybe it could come together in a manner that would fit right, that would give me the chance to do things the way I'd like to do it. It's come together."

Carroll confirmed he'll have a lead role in choosing the team's new general manager. This is Pete Carroll's third shot at the pros. In 90's, he had was let go from the New York Jets and New England Patriots. He's betting on a better performance here, where heads are still spinning over home-grown coach Jim Mora.
