"Not On Our Bus" Safety Patrols
Pierce Transit Police Chief Rod Baker says it's in response to a surge in problems caused by young people on or near transit facilities.
"Everything from just being unruly and ruckus and intimidating," he says, "to assaults and even in some cases robberies."
An incident in September brought the issue to a head when a medically-frail 13 year-old was beaten by high school students on a Pierce Transit bus.
Baker says his officers are teaming with Tacoma Police to boost their uniformed presence on a number of problem bus routes, including routes that serve several high schools. Plainclothes officers will also be riding the buses. Baker says those who violate Pierce Transit's Conduct Code will be banned from the buses for three months. Criminal behavior will get violators arrested.
Baker hopes the enforcement campaign will send a message to Pierce Transit riders that the agency takes their safety seriously.
