Solid Lead for Constantine
SEATTLE, WA
(KPLU) -
King County voters have given a solid edge to an incumbent councilman over a political newcomer in the race to elect a new county executive. Dow Constantine leads former KIRO TV news anchor Susan Hutchison by 14 points. The 57-43 advantage was something Constantine says he could hardly believe.
"Absolutely floored by the fact we're ahead by that margin. I thought it would be much closer. But I appreciate the confidence people are placing in me, and I'm going to do absolutely everything in my power to live up to it," Constantine said, after addressing hundreds of cheering supporters at Seattle's Edgewater Hotel.
He had just declared victory, something Hutchison was not yet ready to concede to him. She had tried to paint the 7-year councilman as the incumbent, but Constantine says that strategy backfired with voters.
"What they saw, was they had one candidate who had the experience and shared their values and could lead King County forward. The people of King County want a clean environment and modern transit choices," he said.
Constantine raised twice the amount of money for his campaign than Hutchison, bringing in more than a million dollars. Everyone who showed up for this party was handed an envelope, and asked to make one more donation to settle the bills from a campaign many expected would not be settled for days.
