(KPLU) - Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels is running a surprising third in a tight 3-way race to see which two candidates make it to the general election.

Coming in first in early returns is political newcomer Mike McGinn whose campaign centered around his opposition to a tunnel replacement for the Alaskan Way Viaduct.

With 26.58% of the vote, McGinn is only only slightly ahead of challenger Joe Mallahan, with 25.77%, and incumbent Greg Nickels, with 25.06%. Standing outside the nightclub where his supporters were partying, McGinn said some people may have underestimated the power of his message.

Former T-Mobile President Joe Mallahan was holding a victory celebration at Fado Irish Pub in downtown Seattle. He said he looks forward to facing McGinn. "Getting the current mayor out of the race is the first step towards fixing what's wrong with city government," he said.

Meanwhile, third place finisher Mayor Greg Nickels told supporters gathered at the UFCW union hall that he fully expects, when all the votes are in, he will be one of the top two finishers.

Nickels told reporters he's felt like a pinata the last several weeks with seven opponents taking swipes at him.
