(KPLU) - Dozens of parks in King County could close next year. County Executive Kurt Triplett says shuttering parks would help stave off severe cuts to social services.

The county is facing a $56 million dollar budget shortfall. The proposal is to mothball 39 neighborhood county parks.

Triplett said it was a difficult decision made with sadness and regret. "We simply can no longer afford to fund these parks while we are cutting public health, the prosecutor, the courts and the sheriff," he said.

Big regional parks including Marymoor in Redmond and the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way will not be affected. Most parks on the closure list are in areas likely to be annexed by surrounding cities.

The county is willing to give the parks to cities, school districts, ports or non profits willing to keep them as public parks.
