Tolls - But no Booths - for 520 Bridge
(2009-06-28)
(KPLU) - When you think of driving on a toll bridge, images of stop and go traffic on a grimy east-coast turnpike might come to mind. But when tolls start on the 520 bridge next year, they'll be collected with a newfangled system that eliminates the need for booths.

Technology first implemented in Canada twenty years ago makes it possible for the state to collect tolls electronically. The system is already in place on the Tacoma Narrows bridge and Highway 167.
If you set it up before crossing, you can get a transponder with a computer chip to put inside your windshield. Sensors above the toll roads read it and deduct your fee from a pre-paid account.

Janet Matkin is a tolls specialist for the state department of transportation. "It's really the wave of the future," Matkin says. All-electronic tolling is something that's being implemented across the country."

She says if you don't have the transponder, cameras above the lanes will photograph your license plate, and the registered owner will be billed at a slightly higher rate after your trip. This is already happening to drivers who miss tolls on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge - although they're charged a penalty since there are also booths there. Matkin says the all-electronic system on the 520 bridge is designed for more speed. It's expected to reduce traffic congestion, by charging higher tolls at peak commute times.

"Depending on the different toll rates and what traffic levels do, we can see up to a 20-30 mile an hour increase in speeds, during peak hours," Matkin says.

Prices could be as high as $5 one way. They'll be set by the state transportation commission sometime next year. The plan is to start charging next October - tentatively on the catchy date of 10-10-2010.
