SEATTLE, WA
(KPLU) -
Seattle Schools will hire back 57 teachers who received layoff notices last month. Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson said she expects most of those recalled will likely be able to return to the classrooms where they now teach. At Wednesday evening's school board meeting, Goodloe-Johnson said jobs were restored through $5 million dollars in budget adjustments. They include more federal stimulus money than the district had anticipated. She said she's 'saddened' that more than 100 teachers remain on the list of layoffs. She says Seattle Education Association leaders have been notified of the recall. The teacher's union has been sharply critical of the district cuts. More than 160 teachers received reduction in force' notices - or RIF's - in May, as part of a strategy to patch a $34 million dollar budget gap. Union president Olga Addae told KPLU News the RIF's are unnecessary, and that budget cuts should come from other areas and preserve teachers in the classroom. Seattle Public Schools press release
