Seattle Schools Announce Layoffs; Numbers Climb Statewide
In a press release, Goodloe-Johnson says the reduction in force was a painful decision.' She noted the budget gap also forced the district to cut some central office staff, and implement a hiring freeze, in addition to closing schools and consolidating programs. In her statement, the Superintendent says she hopes to be able to rehire some of those laid off because of anticipated retirements and resignations.
Meanwhile, leaders with the Seattle Education Association - the union that represents district teachers - met with some of their affected member last night, offering informational support.
Across the state, budget woes are hitting teachers hard. The Washington Education Association says so far nearly 25-hundred (2,500) teachers have been riffed, and leaders say they expect that number to be much higher as the statewide layoff picture is revealed.

Seattle schools will layoff 172 teachers and other certified staff to help close a 34 million dollar budget deficit. The announcement came late Friday from Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson.
