Kickstarter-funded debut album by the the Pacific Mambo Orchestra won a 2014 Grammy for “Best Tropical Latin Album” beating favorite Marc Anthony and other Latin music stars. “This GRAMMY is a victory not just for us but for independent artists everywhere. We want it to deliver hope to all of those artists in their home studios and garages. We’re independent and we made it happen.”
Bringing back and building upon the great Latin Big Band sounds of the 1940’s through 1960’s the Pacific Mambo Orchestra (PMO) plays the music of Latin giants such as Machito, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz and many others and include those rich traditions with their own contemporary and original arrangements. Their music spans many Latin genres -- Salsa, Mambo, Latin Jazz, Cha Cha Cha -- along with a fusion of sounds that incorporated more modern genres (R&B, Hip Hop). Their shows also pays tribute to the pioneers of the classic mambo orchestras, all while paving the way to a bold new sound designed to reach the next generation of Big Band listeners. PMO is currently the only Latin Big Band fully active on the West Coast.
This 19-piece ensemble from San Francisco, led by pianist Christian Tumalan and trumpeter Steffen Kuehn, offer richly textured arrangements that flow through their entire production with exquisite playing by California's ace musicians. With a repertoire of mostly original scores, their selections move with a frenetic mammoth pace, producing palpable sounds, rhythms, and beats, like only a true big band is capable of.
