According to one measure, 99% of Americans and Europeans no longer experience a “truly dark sky.” In his latest book The End of Night: Searching for Natural darkness in an Age of Artificial Light, Paul Bogard reveals the extent to which people must go to see the night sky –indeed the world– as our ancestors did, while debunking commonly-held beliefs about why we have banished darkness from our nighttime landscape. Bogard’s journey brings us in contact with the modern lamp-lighters of London, the keepers of the Luxor beam in Las Vegas, and the Parisian architect responsible for lighting some of the world’s most treasured locations. Each illuminates a small part of Bogard’s broader thesis, namely that electric light banishes not only darkness, but places us at a further remove from “our sense of scale in the real universe.”
Double feature! Admission to this event also gains entry to Tom Barbash and Jess Walter “Stay Up With Me” at 7:30pm.
