Daniel Lieberman The Evolutionary Story of the Human Body
General Event Information
Dates and Times:
October 2, 7:30PM-9:00PM; (Doors Open at 6:30PM)
Just think how the human body has transformed over millions of years—onto two feet, away from a fruit-based diet, into superlative athletic abilities, and with very large brains. Certainly all this evolution brings benefits (longevity), but Harvard professor Daniel Lieberman says it also has created conditions our bodies still can’t handle (obesity, type 2 diabetes). Showing how cultural evolution differs from biological evolution, Lieberman, author of The Story of the Human Body, proposes that many of these chronic illnesses persist (and in some cases, intensify) because of “dysevolution,” a dynamic whereby only the symptoms, rather than the causes of these maladies, are treated.
