When In Tents: How We Camped opens at the Nanaimo Museum this month, the only thing missing will be the mosquitoes! The exhibition, produced by the museum with the assistance of local collectors, is a nostalgic look at camping before the arrival of bring-it-all-with-you travel trailers and RVs. Through a series of recreated “campsites” visitors can explore a world of living under canvas stretching almost 100 years. “People are drawn to camping for many reasons” said museum curator David Hill-Turner. “For many it is the opportunity to escape from the hustle and distractions of urban life. It’s a popular inexpensive vacation that creates memorable experiences with family and friends.” Camping under the stars is as Canadian as hockey and curling. And, one of the most enjoyable aspects of living on Vancouver Island is spending a few days every year living outdoors. From mountains to beaches and coupled with a diverse climate it means we can camp in every month of the year. Where else in Canada can you camp on the beach in January one weekend and in snow the next? Adult: $2 Child: $(5-12): $ 0.75 Senior: $1.75 Student: $1.75 |
