Rural Doctors - In Demand and Short in Supply
(2006-09-12)
(Prairie Public) - The Dean of the U-N-D School of Medicine and Health Sciences says additional efforts will have to be made if North Dakota is going to meet the demand to place doctors in rural areas. Doctor H. David Wilson says filling the need will be no easy task because the difficulties rest on many levels. He says answers will need to come from the federal and state level... along with support from the local level...

"...You really often-times have to find a jor or career for two people. Maybe it's the spouse that is the problem. Maybe the doctor wants to go to your community, but there's nothing for his or her spouse to do in terms of their own career. Communities have to help us. Communities have to recruit. Communities have to do what they can."

Wilson says he's already working with state officials trying to find additional funding - which could also off-set some of the debt students incur on their way to become a doctor. He says the investments pay off in many ways. Wilson says the school receives nearly 15-Million dollars from the state - which generates an economic impact of about 175-Million dollars.
