(woi) -
A nursing mother was recently asked to cover up or leave the Hoover House Restaurant in West Branch Iowa, an establishment that had recently hosted a wet T-Shirt contest. The incident prompted breastfeeding advocated to stage a nurse-in at the restaurant across the street. It's an interesting story that illustrates mixes attitudes about breastfeeding and breasts. On one hand images of scantily clad models with breasts bulging out of bikini or low-cut shirts don't make one blush, while catching a glimpse of a breastfeeding mother may shock and offend. Local leaders from Ames and Iowa City chapters of La Leche League International discuss the rights of nursing mothers and the practical reasons for breastfeeding in public. Also featured, Rehka Basu, columnist for the Des Moines Register recently took up this subject in a recent column.
