The Next Step in the Tillman 'Friendly-Fire' Probe
(2007-08-02)
(Associated Press) -

Congressional investigators will interview three former presidential assistants in their inquiry into the friendly fire death of Pat Tillman in Afghanistan.

But a House committee, trying to find out what the administration knew and when, had to agree to certain conditions before getting the White House OK.

The interviews, with former presidential counselor Dan Bartlett, former press secretary Scott McClellan and former speechwriter Michael Gerson, will have no transcript and will take place in the presence of White House counsel.

The committee is trying to find out why the public was told for five weeks that Tillman -- a former N-F-L player -- had died at the hands of the enemy.

Former Pentagon officials, including ex-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, have denied any cover-up.
