President Steps Up Sanctions Against Sudan
President Bush says "the world has a responsibility to put an end" to the suffering in Darfur.
With those words, he has ordered new economic sanctions to pressure Sudan's government to halt the bloodshed in Darfur.
The sanctions are aimed at government-run companies involved in Sudan's oil industry and three individuals. One of those individuals is a rebel leader suspected of being involved in the violence that has left more than 200-thousand people dead in four years of fighting.
Speaking at the White House, the president promised the people of Darfur that "the United States will not avert our eyes from a crisis that challenges the conscience of the world."
The president also has directed Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to draft a proposed U-N resolution to strengthen international pressure on the government of President Omar al-Bashir, who has resisted the deployment of peacekeepers to the region.
