The Genoa Indian School Reunion/Celebration takes place on August 9th, 2014 in Genoa, Nebraska at the Genoa Indian School Museum & Interpretive Center (209 East Webster). This is the 25th year of this celebration. To honor and celebrate the students that attended the Genoa Federal Indian Boarding School, the 43 Tribal Nations that had students attend have sent their Tribal Nation’s Flag and/ or Tribal Seal. Great meaning and Tribal Identity is associated with their Flag and the gift of a Flag is one of the highest honors a Tribal Nation can bestow.
The day’s activities include access to the research center, where descendants are invited to look up family members, view photos and old school newspapers. There will also be films and presentations on the Genoa Indian School and past reunions. Native American jewelry & crafts will be available to purchase and there will be tours of the Indian School Interpretive Center. The Santee Youth Dance Group will share their culture through dances, regalia and an excellent moderator. And an ice cream social at 4:30 pm with recognition of each Native American present will conclude a day full of entertaining and educational experiences.
The general public is welcome and encouraged to attend all these free activities and learn about this Federal Boarding School (a National Historic Site in operation from 1884 – 1934) and about the Native Tribes who sent students here. For more information, call 402-993-6036 or 402-562-8528.
