On Friday, May 9, 2014, at 7 pm, Film Streams will present a special Filmmakers’ Screening of HANK AND ASHA, celebrating the opening night of a one-week run of the film at the Ruth Sokolof Theater, 1340 Mike Fahey Street. Post-show Q&A will feature writer-director and Omaha native James E. Duff and writer-producer-editor Julia Morrison. In the charming romantic comedy, an Indian woman studying in Prague and a lonely New Yorker begin an unconventional correspondence through video letters - two strangers searching for human connection in a hyper-connected world. When their relationship deepens, they must decide whether or not to meet face to face. Winner of the Audience Award at the 2013 Slamdance Film Festival, HANK AND ASHA is a film about identity, longing, and the irresistible appeal of entertaining life's what-ifs. Husband-and-wife team Duff and Morrison were teaching at a film school in Prague – negotiating a new environment, culture, and language – when they became interested in the uses and limitations of technology to combat distance, loneliness, and isolation. When they learned that a friend had courted the woman who became his wife through video messages, the seed of HANK AND ASHA was planted. Christopher Campbell of Film School Rejects praised the film for “great charm and a romantic spirit that’s rarely found at the movies today.” Tickets for the one-time Filmmakers’ Screening are on sale at filmstreams.org Showtimes and tickets for the regular run will be available later. Tickets for both the Filmmakers’ Screening and to the regular run of the film at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater are $9 general; $7 for students, seniors, teachers, military, and those arriving by bicycle; and $4.50 for Film Streams Members.
