February 7, 5:00PM-7:30PM
Join your friends and community for “We Are the Ones We’ve Been Waiting For” on Feb. 7 at the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation. This special testing and treatment community event is Omaha’s official observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD). It is designed to encourage African Americans to “get educated, get tested, get involved, and get treated.” According to the latest statistics, blacks, who make up about 14 percent of the U.S. population, continue to experience the most severe burden of HIV, accounting for an estimated 44 percent of new HIV cases, and about the same percentage of people living with AIDS. Black men account for about a third of new HIV infections. The rate of HIV infections for black women is 20 times as high as for white women. If the course of this epidemic is not changed, it is estimated that one in 16 black men and one in 32 black women will be diagnosed with an HIV infection. Unfortunately, many who are infected with HIV do not know their status and may unknowingly transmit the virus to others. Now is the time to mobilize and reverse the course of this disease, because: “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” Feb. 7 is the date and the time is from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation, 3448 Evans Street. For more information, you may call Douglas County Health Department at 402- 444-7471.
