The next open forum at First Central Congregational Church will be:THE NATIVE AMERICAN PERSPECTIVE OF THE DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY. This forum will take place on January 19. Tom Render,† instructor in the Native American Studies Department at UNO, will speak on the Native American perspective of the Doctrine of Discovery.† Recall that at the 2013 UCC Synod, a resolution was passed demanding the federal government to renounce the use of the DoD to take lands, culture and spiritual practices from the First Nations of North America in the name of Christianity and the expansion of western culture across the United States.† Tom is Lakota whose lineage is of Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe now on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota.† Tom served as president of the Inter-Tribal Student Council as a student at UNO.† His Masterís Thesis was titled At the Heart of It All: Cheyenne River Reservation and the Leaders of the Lakota Ghost Dance.
