Each year the national Sierra Club ranks America’s greenest colleges, looking at bricks and mortar practices ranging from where a campus gets its energy, to whether its landscapes use native plants and its cafeterias offer recycled napkins. (Sierra Club’s 2013 Green Schools report can be found at www.sierraclub.org/sierra/201309/coolschools).
To help Omaha learn more about what our local colleges are doing to promote sustainability on campus, representatives from UNO, Creighton, and Metropolitan Community College will share their experiences. Whether it be using renewable energy, working towards carbon-neutral or zero-waste goals, training students to work in the green collar work-force, or shaping students to become tomorrow’s environmental leaders and citizens, each of these schools is doing work we can learn from and be inspired by.
Speakers will be Patrick Wheeler (University of Nebraska at Omaha), Mary Duda (Creighton University), and Lindsay Neemann & Christopher Swanson (Metropolitan Community College).
Please join the Sierra Club and Transition Omaha to learn about the sustainability initiatives going on right here in Omaha at our local institutes of higher education. Transition Omaha is focused on providing information about climate change, the end of cheap energy, associated economic instability, and inspiring individuals to strengthen their local communities. More information at www.TransitionOmaha.org and www.SierraNebraska.org. Free and open to the public.
