UNL Garden Friends is hosting a luncheon and lecture at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, March 17 (postponed from Feb. 24 due to weather). This new annual event is our major fundraiser to support the UNL Botanical Gardens and Arboretum. The cost is $30 per person.
*A Gathering of Friends* will take place at the Landscape Services Shop just east of 33rd Street on the East Campus Loop Road and will feature a soup and salad luncheon, a silent auction and a fabulous lecture by Jan Riggenbach, whose newspaper and magazine columns have been inspiring Midwest gardeners for more than 30 years. “Midwest Gardening,” Jan’s syndicated garden column, appears weekly in newspapers throughout the region, including the Omaha World-Herald.
Riggenbach’s lecture topic, *“Big Ideas for Smaller Gardens*” is informed by her need to downscale her gardening after a recent move to Omaha. She and her husband lived on a 30-acre parcel in southwest Iowa.
Riggenbach is the author of “Midwest Gardener’s Handbook” and co-author (with Ann Lovejoy) of “Ortho’s All About Perennials.” Other book projects include the plant chapter of “Sunset Midwestern Landscaping,” plant writer for “HGTV Landscape Makeovers,” and the tree chapter of “Better Homes and Gardens New Garden Book.” Jan’s writings have also appeared in Midwest Living since the magazine’s beginning in 1987.
Garden Friends has gathered artwork, photographs, plants and services for the auction. Join attendees in bidding on photographs by Joel Sartore and John Keller, artwork by Kay Logan-Peters, and services such as yard clean up and photography lessons and more.
