February 23, 9:00AM-1:00PM
It is the time of year, when Fontenelle Forest calls for volunteers for the local FrogWatch USA chapter. Approximately one out of every three amphibian species is experiencing declining population numbers. There are 122 species worldwide where so little information is known the species cannot be definitively listed as extinct. FrogWatch USA is an Association of Zoos and Aquariums citizen science program designed for long-term monitoring of frog and toad populations. This program has the ability to collect more data, over a larger area, than a single researcher or even a group of researchers. The goal of FrogWatch USA is to provide reliable, quality data that can help describe species diversity; detect rare or invasive species or shifts in species range; and serve as a wetlands health indicator. Fontenelle Forest is hosting a training session on Saturday, February 23, 2013 from 9:00a.m. - 1:00p.m. at the Fontenelle Forest Nature Center located at 1111 Bellevue Blvd. North in Bellevue, NE. During this session participants will learn how to become involved in this Citizen Science program, the importance of the program, and review how to identify Nebraska frogs and toads. This is a family-friendly volunteer opportunity; however, these training sessions are for participants 16 and older. Volunteers are encouraged to monitor their location(s) at least twice a week during the season from March into August beginning one half hour after sunset. If you have any questions or are interested in becoming a Fontenelle Forest FrogWatch volunteer please contact Cori Tejral at fontenelleforestfrogwatch@gmail.com or Paul Lahowetz at plahowetz@fontenelleforest.org or (402) 731-3140.
