Acclaimed saxophonist Donnie McCaslin will perform in the 1200 CLUB at the Holland Center, presented by Omaha Performing Arts and sponsored by First National Bank. Identified by his “gargantuan tenor sound,” McCaslin and his group will perform in the 1200 CLUB on Friday, February 22 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets for the Donnie McCaslin Group are $25 in advance and $30 day of the show and are available online at TicketOmaha.com, by calling 402.345.0606 or at the Ticket Omaha office inside the Holland Performing Arts Center, 13th & Douglas streets. The 1200 CLUB transforms the Holland Performing Arts Center’s most intimate venue, the Suzanne and Walter Scott Recital Hall, into a relaxed nightclub setting where patrons can experience performances by nationally and internationally known artists in jazz, blues and comedy. While enjoying the evening’s entertainment, audience members may enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails served right to their table. Inspired by his father, a pianist and vibraphonist, Donnie McCaslin started playing tenor saxophone at age twelve and progressed quickly. He soon was touring Europe and participated in the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival’s California All-Star band while still in high school. After attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, he toured with several groups and really began turning heads with his solo work in larger ensembles. He played first with Ken Schaphorst’s big band, then with the highly praised Maria Schneider Orchestra. His performance on the 2004 album Concert In the Garden garnered McCaslin a Grammy® nomination for “Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.” When he later performed with the Douglas Quintet, The Jazz Times described him as a “versatile player who moves easily between inside and outside musical zones…there’s a fluidity and grace to his playing even when he’s pushing at envelopes.”He received a Doris Duke grant for new jazz composition from Chamber Music America and his sixth album, In Pursuit, was the result. The album’s concept - single-minded devotion to a distant goal, marked by inventive exploration – has characterized his music almost from the beginning. More recently McCaslin has achieved wide praise for the incisive twists and purposeful turns of his solos along with his distinctive voice as a composer. These well-recognized qualities have been displayed the past decade during which he has recorded eight albums as a leader, collaborating with a wide range of musicians. Along the way McCaslin won the Downbeat Magazine Critics’ poll for “Rising Star on the Tenor Saxophone,” two years in a row. His 2008 release, Recommended Tools, was included in many critics’ top ten lists for jazz record of the year. Preview a video clip of Donnie McCaslin at TicketOmaha.com
