PRI's The World - Geo Quiz Podcast 268
Vanishing Song

A song is the clue for our quiz today... We want to know the country where you might hear a particular kind of kind of singing. It sounds a little like a Russian village chorus ...or the Bulgarian Women's Chorus. But it's not. This song is sung in Seto (SEH too) ...a language spoken by about 5-thousand people. It belongs to what linguists call the Balto-Finnic group of the Finno-Ugric (YOU grihk) languages. The Seto ethnic minority are among the last remaining traditional folk cultures in Europe. Songs like this one have been passed down from generation to generation. These are traditional melodies....though Seto women like to improvise. They've been known to add contemporary references to things like taxes, the new economy, and the Internet. So add up the clues and try to come up with the name of the country - we'll play you the song.

The World's Geo Quiz tests your knowledge of world geography, and introduces you to fascinating people and places around the globe. The World is a US-based international news and analysis program co-produced by the BBC World Service, Public Radio International, and WGBH Boston.
