Rockwall author Joe B. Hewitt shows and signs his new book, "Murder on the Sky Ride," at Half Price Books in Rockwall.
The story is set in San Marcos, Texas, where the San Marcos River wells up out of the ground cool and clear. The mystery murder takes place on the sky ride, a cable car that goes across the river to a hillside.
Hewitt said, "'Murder on the Sky Ride' has lots of action, and characters you will like, such as Gar Garcia, Texas Ranger, his wife, Liz, and their son, Enrique. You might not like some others, but you'll think them interesting, like big shot Burke Masters; Steve Pierce, 21, ex-convict, trying to stay out of trouble but not succeeding; Johnny Diaz, almost - but not quite - bad to the bone; Hawknose, career criminal; and Thomas, law student turned killer. The bad guys cuss and use the F-word, but it's not spelled out in the book. You can recommend the book to your mother or your daughter, but mostly it's a man's adventure story.
"This novel gives a picture of the diverse ethnic and cultural makeup of Texas, and give a private view of two families, one whose members range from dope smuggler to successful attorney-politician, and other ranging from hot-head Chicano activist to a Texas Ranger," the author said.
San Marcos is a real city but events and characters portrayed there are fictional. The adventure takes place in 1978. It involves the mammalian diving reflex, insurance policies' homicide exclusions, an obsessive trophy collector, and clever detective work.
The book is available in print or as an e-book, available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
