Service providers advocate "housing first" in Texas 2007.09.06 More than 400 social service providers meeting this week in Dallas say it costs taxpayers more to leave people homeless on the streets than to provide them the housing and the assistance they need to get back on their feet. KERA's Catherine Cuellar says that's why advocacy groups across Texas are working on plans to put the "Housing First" philosophy into practice. KERA

DISD Addresses Needs of Transient Students 2005.05.03 The majority of homeless people are minority men. But a survey of shelters conducted earlier this year found one in five homeless people in Dallas County is a child. City Park Elementary is one of four DISD schools participating in the district's homeless education program, because of its proximity to several shelters just south of downtown. 90.1's Catherine Cuellar reports on efforts to address the needs of these transient students. Chronic Homelessness in DFW Hampers Efforts to Address Range of Needs 2004.12.31 Dallas and Fort Worth are seeking federal grants in an attempt to end homelessness. Both cities are taking steps to build new homeless assistance centers, but some service providers don't want a 24-hour facility next door. Among the chronically homeless, the majority have criminal records, suffer from drug and alcohol addiction, and have serious medical problems. These are just a few of the obstacles to reducing homelessness, as 90.1's Catherine Cuellar reports. KERA
Fort Worth Gets Head Start in Plan to End Homelessness 2004.12.17 The U.S. government is requiring all major cities to develop a 10-year plan to end chronic homelessness. But Fort Worth was already working on creative ways to address the problem in part, by listening to as many community voices as possible. 90.1's Catherine Cuellar reports. KERA
Collin County's New Homeless Facility Gets Dedication 2004.10.11 On any given day, more than 100,000 people in Texas may be homeless, with an increasing number living outside major cities. Since 2001, Collin County has seen its homeless population quadruple, and its sole shelter has doubled its number of clients. But a new, larger facility was dedicated Friday in McKinney, as 90.1's Catherine Cuellar reports. KERA
