North Texas
TEA Comissioner Meeting with DISD Officials
DALLAS, TX
(KERA) -
The Texas Education Commissioner is expected to meet today with Dallas school officials about the district's ongoing budget crisis. KERA's Bill Zeeble has more.
The DISD says the private meeting is planned for 3 p.m. Friday between the TEA Commissioner Robert Scott and Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa. The topic is the district's $84 million financial deficit that led to hundreds of teacher and other personnel layoffs last week. Those cuts were just some of the budget cutting measures. The financial shortfall was disclosed last month when Hinojosa explained the DISD hired too many teachers, couldn't pay for them and didn't know it because of bungled book keeping and confusing software programs.
Scott previously said the commission would not officially get involved with the district's financial problems if trustees approved teacher layoffs, which they did.
