Evacuees Can't Use Motel Assistance
DALLAS, TX
(KERA) -
FEMA says it will pay for 30 days of hotel expenses for hurricane evacuees whose houses are uninhabitable.
But Dallas Emergency Management Director Kenny Shaw says qualified evacuees in Dallas still can't leave the shelters because FEMA has neglected to provide the necessary meal and transportation assistance.
Shaw: They are not offering any kind of meal expense and a lot of the people are up here without any money at all. So even if they went to a hotel they wouldn't be able to eat. And we can' shuttle them back and forth to 1,000 to probably 800 different rooms.
Shaw says he's frustrated because he's requested the additional help from FEMA but has not received a reply. A FEMA spokesman told KERA he has no information about meal vouchers. Shaw says Dallas will have to remain in the shelter business until the meal and transit vouchers are provided.
