Dallas Firefighters Do Search and Rescue on Texas Coast
DALLAS, TX
(KERA) -
Dallas firefighters on Texas Task Force Two are in Orange, on the Texas coast, helping with search and rescue after Hurricane Ike.
Dallas Deputy Fire Chief David Martin is heading up Texas Task Force ONE and TWO operations in Orange hit hard by Ike. Chief Martin says they arrived as soon as the storm passed through and immediately started boat rescues, grabbing people from attics and off rooftops.
Martin: There were many who had medical needs; some who were dependent upon supplemental oxygen, some who were cardiac patients. Others, of course, other than the emotional trauma, had come thru without any injuries.
Chief Martin says they're doing a more thorough house to house search today, now that the water had receded.
Martin: And you can clearly see where there's been significant damage in this area. It's quite a mess.
The Chief says power came back on today at the hospital in Orange, and the High School - the operations base for search and rescue. But he expects his team will be moving elsewhere soon.
Martin: There's some smaller, outlying areas that may need some of our resources, so we may be down here for a few more days.
