DISD Reports Budget Shortfall
DALLAS, TX
(KERA) -
The Dallas Independent School District says it's $64 million in the hole for the school year that recently ended. A major financial reorganization is expected.
Superinendent Michael Hinojosa says the district will cover the shortfall using its $120 million fund balance.
He blames the deficit on inadequate budgeting for needed, extra staff, and says the district's failure to account for the expense through financial controls, budget data and staff allocations is unacceptable.
Hinojosa says the finance department will now report directly to his chief of staff, who will create a plan to cut costs this year. Recommendations will go to the board, and the superintendent says all options are on the table.
