Dallas Prepares for New Round of Evacuees
DALLAS, TX
(KERA) -
Dallas is getting ready for another round of hurricane evacuees ahead of Ike. KERA's BJ Austin reports officials believe they could see more refugees than those who fled Hurricane Gustav over the Labor Day weekend.
Emergency Operations Director Kenny Shaw says they plan to have the convention center ready for evacuees by Wednesday night. He says it appears Ike is taking aim at the Houston and Galveston areas, and that means the evacuation of a major metropolitan area. He says the plan for Gustav worked well, but this time he expects more complexity, including hospital-to-hospital medical evacuations.
Shaw: We're virtually guaranteed to get those this time. That won't involve the shelter operation. But it will put our Fire Department EMS crews headed to DFW Airport whenever they arrive. They'll start distributing patients to the hospitals in the metroplex. That hurricane will eat up a lot of bed availability in the metroplex hospitals.
Dallas spent nearly half a million dollars on shelter operations for Gustav.
