Many Evacuees Await Help For Trip Home
DALLAS, TX
(KERA) -
Thousands of Gustav evacuees are returning home to Southeast Texas and Louisiana. The Texas Department of Transportation says traffic's heavy in places, but still moving well.
The word's now out from New Orleans that residents can officially come home after midnight, even though many have already left. Residents from Beaumont, Port Arthur, Vidor and other Texas towns may already be home by now. The Department of Transportation's Chris Lippincott says Texas roads are crowded especially in southeast Texas, but without delays.
Lippincott: We're seeing heavier east bound traffic moving back into the state of Louisiana. We're doing all we can to assist and to keep roads safe. We're making best use we can of dynamic message signs, those big message signs, to let folks know where they can find services and relief stations.
Two million people evacuated ahead of hurricane Gustav. Lippincott says it's not known how many from other Texas or Louisiana towns ended up in the Dallas and Fort Worth areas.
The Dallas office of Emergency management says its shelter will close as soon as all evacuees leave. About 20 are waiting on donated gas cards so they can afford to drive home. Another 54 came here by bus and need the state to send another bus to take them back.
