Texas GOP On McCain Veep Choice
DALLAS, TX
(KERA) -
Texans heading to the national Republican convention are generally applauding John McCain's choice of a vice-presidential running mate. But KERA's Shelley Kofler reports Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is a virtual unknown who must still be introduced to the nation.
Texas GOP leaders reacted quickly and positively to John McCain's choice of a woman, and self-proclaimed maverick to be his running mate.
Governor Rick Perry said 44-year old Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is a proven reformer. She's gained kudos for exposing ethical violations within her Republican party.
Cathie Adams, President of the conservative Texas Eagle Forum likes the way Palin has handled Alaska's budget.
Adams: She's been unafraid to veto bills that have been spending bills. I'm very encouraged by that because as far as I'm concerned the Republican Party can win when we hold to our principals of smaller government and lower taxes.
Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison said the choice of Palin, a virtual unknown outside her state, is a bold move to sway independent, women voters.
Hillary Clinton supporters, according to SMU Political Science Professor Cal Jillson.
Jillson: What that presents him with is the opportunity to present Sarah Palin to the nation as a blank slate that he can color on, highlight the particular elements of her biography that are most useful to him and try to get women in the country who cast almost 55 percent of the votes in Presidential elections to give another look to a relatively, shall we say, aging white man on the republican side.
