Faith Group Will Tackle Education, Homelessness
(2009-10-06)
(KERA) -

More than a thousand Dallas-area church leaders will convene for a revival next month when they'll map out plans to improve troubled schools. They'll also tackle homelessness by teaming up churches and the government.

Pastor Zan Holmes: We've never come together like this. This is historic.

Zan Holmes is Pastor Emeritus of St. Luke's Community United Methodist Church. He was joined by other faith leaders including pastor Freddy Haynes of Friendship West Baptist Church. Times are tough, he said, and a partnership among different churches and elected leaders is vital.

Senior Pastor Freddy Haynes: If President Obama can get Al Sharpton and Newt Gingrich to be crusaders for education nationwide then I know we can come together in this city. The dropout rate for Black male youth is 70 percent. That's not helping any of us.

The November event will be free, and was sparked by Jim Wallis, founder of Sojourners, a faith group that's helped organize similar gatherings in other cities.
