Gamestop Turns 3rd Quarter Profit
DALLAS, TX
(KERA) -
Grapevine-based GameStop, the world's largest videogame retailer, says profits grew 12 percent in the 3rd quarter, despite the nation's ongoing economic problems. KERA's Bill Zeeble has more
Gamestop says it earned 52 million dollars in the 3rd quarter , which equals 31 cents a share, beating analysts' estimates. A year ago the company earned almost 47 million dollars.
It turned a profit even though game hardware sales fell along with overall store sales.
The kicker was Gamestops' used gamed business, that jumped 19 percent. It also benefited from the release and sales of record-setting game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The game sold 2 and a half million copies in its first 3 days, and retails for about 60 dollars. Gamestop CEO Dan DeMatteo says the holiday season has started strong. He's optimistic game sales will continue in the same vain through the holiday season.
