State Officials Tighten Security at the Polls in November
(2008-09-16)

(kcur) - Voter confidence is prime and the Missouri Secretary of State issued orders Tuesday to hike security at the polls in November. KCUR's Dan Verbeck has more of the story.

Certain voting equipment is being double checked for accuracy. More than ever before.

"They're called logic and accuracy testing when you do them before the election and post-election audits when you do them after the election, says State Secretary Robin Carnahan. "We're increasing the number of precincts involved in this from one percent, which has been the current process, to 5 percent of the precincts.

Carnahan says this will be the first presidential race encounter many Missourians have had with optical scan equipment. And she wants to remind that every ballot, no matter how it's filed, has a paper backup. It's for counting and for confidence.
