Designer Homes in a Kit
A Missouri architect, Rocio Romero, talks about how you can build your own designer home from a kit.

Maybe you want to live in a bright, modernist building – something with plenty natural light, clean lines and a minimalist look. Typically, these types of houses cost a fortune to custom design and build. But there's a growing interest in modernist pre-fab homes, designed by contemporary architects. They're relatively low-cost, because most of the structure is built in a factory, and then erected on site and can be customized to suit your taste, and the environment.
One young architect who's gotten a lot of national attention for her pre-fab homes is Rocio Romero. She runs her company from a farm in Perryville, Missouri, and then ships kits that are almost complete homes. So far, most have gone to the East and West Coasts. KCUR's Sylvia Maria Gross recently met up with Romero and also talked to one of her customers who lives here in Kansas City – Ethan Whitehill. Whitehill has been blogging about his new home in northern Arkansas at Secret Fortress Hideout.
