Aaron Douglas: From Topeka to Harlem
A traveling retrospective called Aaron Douglas: African American Modernist opened recently at the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence. The exhibition includes more than 90 of Douglas’ book illustrations, paintings and murals. For pictures of the new exhibition and mural, check .

The artist Aaron Douglas was born in Topeka, Kansas and taught at Lincoln High School in Kansas City, Missouri. That was before he went on to become a major figure in the arts movement called the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and '30s. Arts reporter Laura Spencer has this look at the way Douglas continues to influence artists today.
