"Inventing the Shuttlecocks" at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
Project model "Shuttlecocks" Claes Oldenburg & Coosje van Bruggen Wood and plastic on wood base 7 x 7.25 x 7.25 inches The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
The year after the four giant badminton shuttlecocks were installed on the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, The New York Times described it as a public art piece making “the world a better and livelier place.” But, in Kansas City, there were grumblings from critics who called it “not art” and a “giant waste.” Fifteen years after the installation of Shuttlecocks (1994) by Claes Oldenburg and Coojse van Bruggen, an exhibition at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art explores the artists' creative process, the fabrication, and the public response.
