Artist Paints Negro Leaguers for Children's Book
Original oil paintings from the book We Are the Ship are now being exhibited at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum through April 13th. Kadir Nelson recently spoke with KCUR's Maria Carter about the book.

by Maria Carter

Kadir Nelson's painted depictions of the African American experience are favorites of art collectors like Denzel Washington and Queen Latifah. He has painted portraits for Major League Baseball and advertisements for Nike, and illustrated children's books by Will Smith and Spike Lee. Most recently, Nelson has created his own children's book, We Are The Ship, which tells the story of the Negro Leagues.
