CB South, Whetstone Park news from recent meeting (2008-09-05)
The Gunnison Board of County Commissioners voted Tuesday to approve the special area regulations for the subdivision, capping a nearly 5 year process and bringing it one step closer to autonomy. Proponents of a proposed commercial and residential area south of Crested Butte on SH 135 known as Whetstone park, got the county commissioners' consent to go ahead to submit a final plan for the project to the planning commission.

Standard mine cleanup continues (2008-08-25)

Molybdenum mining giant enters pact with U.S. Energy Corp. over Lucky Jack (2008-08-22)

No Parking on Town of Mt. Crested Butte Right-of-Way (2008-02-01)

More bighorn deaths reported (2008-01-21)
The fate of a local big horn sheep herd appears to be worsening. Two weeks ago, the Colorado Division of Wildlife reported that eight big horn from what is known as the Fossil Ridge herd had died of suspected pneumonia. Since then, 10 more sheep from the same herd have been found dead.


Electronic voting equipment decertification (2008-01-15)
A big question mark is hovering over what the election will look like this November, in Gunnison County and across the state. In late December, Gunnison County received a notice saying the county's eScans which electronically tabulate hand-written ballots had been decertified. The county's eSlates electronic voting machines had been certified, but only with conditions.


Bull Mountain Natural Gas Pipeline (2008-01-14)
Bull Mountain Natural Gas Pipeline: A proposed natural gas pipeline, directly west of Kebler Pass, was given the final go-ahead from the federal government on Jan. 8. The following day, High Country Citizens' Alliance (HCCA) and several other Western Slope conservation groups announced they would sue the government for choosing a route they see as detrimental to wildlife and inventoried roadless areas.


Division of Wildlife to Conduct Emergency Big Game Feeding (2008-01-14)
The Colorado Division of Wildlife is planning to start emergency feeding operations for big game animals in the Gunnison Basin as soon as possible. Deer will be targeted primarily because they are most affected by adverse weather conditions. Feed and hay will also be provided to bighorn sheep, pronghorn and elk. Providing feed to wildlife requires a major effort and the DOW is seeking volunteers to help.

Winter flight program on the upswing (2008-01-10)
Local transportation officials are optimistic that fuller airplanes flying into the Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport this year will allow for an expansion of the winter flight program in the future. That's despite a scale back in the service this winter. Airline flights are on track to see an increase in flight load factors (percentage of seats filled) this winter tourism season over last year.

BOCC campgrounds: The Gunnison County Commissioners had six simple words for the U.S. Forest Service in a recent letter about the federal agency's proposal to close some local campgrounds. "Fund the forest, not the war," the commissioners wrote.

Gunnison Watershed School District RE1J leaders are first looking within the district for a viable candidate to fill the shoes of superintendent. The school board decided in December to first conduct an internal search for a superintendent prior to launching a national probe.

Denver bus service stalls (2007-12-26)
Funding constraints have put the brakes on a plan in which the Gunnison Valley Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) would help to re-instate bus service from Gunnison to the Front Range. RTA board members last Friday decided not to continue pursuing for the time being round-trip bus service to Denver, following a proposal by one local contractor that was out of the RTA's price range for coordinating the service.
