Muslim Students at MU Get New Prayer Space
(2008-09-23)
COLUMBIA, MO
(KBIA) -
Muslim students at M-U are getting a new prayer space on campus.
It's a small room in the Memorial Union's Green Chapel.
Faeza (Fie-zuh) Khan is the Vice-President of the Muslims Student Organization at
M-U.
She says they used to pray in a Ellis Library storage room.
But they would get interrupted when someone wanted to get into the room.
So a lot of times the problem was that people would feel strange like you people praying and then there are students asking questions, it is just a little awkward. And the prayer obviously requires some concentration, so high traffic areas aren't really conducive to that.
The Muslim Student Organization worked out this deal before the school year began. Faeza (Fie-zuh) says she like the new prayer room and that it's especially important as Muslims celebrate Ramadan (Rahm-oh-Dahn).
