Talks Begin on New High School Land
(2008-09-18)
(KBIA) - Discussions about how to develop the land around Columbia's new high school have begun. Members of the Columbia and Boone County joint Planning and Zoning Commission along with members of the public met Tuesday to discuss how the vicinity around Columbia's third public high school will be used. Columbia Planning and Development Director Tim Teddy says the land will probably be used for housing and recreation and a small amount of commercial development. Teddy says residents have told him they don't want to see any expansive commercial retailers.

There was some concern about the scale of commercial and a couple of public comments and that's why I say I don't think there's any great push right now to make that a site of a regional shopping facility, just what you would call neighborhood services.

Teddy says the Commission wants input from the public so the project reflects what they want in their neighborhood. The joint commission will hold another meeting in November. Columbia's new high school is scheduled to open in August 2010
